Alarm Type: Gas Leak

    Time Dispatched: 15:24

Time on Scene: 15:26

             Control Time: 17:50

The Grand Junction Fire Department responded to a reported “Grade One” gas leak at the request of Xcel Energy. 4 fire units, 1 support unit, and 1 command unit responding, Engine 2 (on scene within 2 minutes of the dispatch time) reports (from Xcel) that high levels of possible sewer gas were present in the area. Fire crews requested an evacuation of approximately one city block surrounding the scene for the safety of our citizens due to the potential hazardous conditions (citizens complied). Charged hose lines were deployed to protect Xcel employees while they tried to locate the source of the leak. Fire crews also monitored gas levels within the business and homes surrounding the area finding no alarming readings within the structures themselves. After several “exploratory” holes were drilled by Xcel, the source was found and a backhoe was used to create a larger hole to get to the source. The leaking gas line was then located and sealed by Xcel employees. Fire units were then able to stand down once the hazard had been secured and all potential hazardous scenarios had been removed. No injuries to the public or our firefighters to report. All residents were allowed back into their homes and businesses and Xcel will assist all residents affected by this event with the relighting of their pilot lights. All fire units clear without further incident.

Additional: GJRC IDT responded to the scene in their mobile unit to assist incident command with communications. Fire Chief Watkins and Operations Chief Roth were on scene with other city officials to monitor the scene.
