Grand Junction Fire Department units were dispatched to 1535 Poplar Dr. this morning for a possible structure in unit 19 at the address. The first unit on scene (within 5 minutes) reports light smoke coming from the 3rd floor of the structure. Fire crews entered the apartment complex to investigate the source and found active smoke and fire in the exterior wall of the structure with extension of the fire into the ceiling. Command ordered a complete evacuation of the apartment complex while fire crews battled the blaze. Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire ensuring that the fire was contained and isolated to the 2 units involved. Once the fire was out, Command released the evacuation and the residents of the unaffected units were able to reenter their apartments. Fire Investigators are on scene working with witnesses and the property manager to determine the cause. No injuries to report to the public or our firefighters. No other structures were involved. All fire investigation questions can be directed to the Grand Junction Fire Marshal’s Office @ 970-549-5800.

Important Safety Message: Please ensure that all smoking materials are property extinguished prior to disposal, especially during high winds. The wind is able to easily reignite smoking materials, such as a cigarette, and cause a fire.
