The Grand Junction Fire Department, along with the Mesa County Sheriff Office, St. Mary’s Careflight Helicopter, and the Fruita Police Department, responded to a call of a possible rescue on the Colorado River earlier this evening. Initial dispatch reports confirmed that a raft had overturned (around 24 Rd.) and was floating down the river towards the Blue Heron boat ramp. Several calls were received by dispatch from worried citizens that had witnessed an overturned raft floating down the river and they feared that someone was in distress. The response incorporated several agencies due to the urgency and specialty of each resource. After approximately 2 hours of searching the river, dispatch was notified that everyone had been accounted for. The individuals involved self-rescued from the river after their raft apparently overturned. They immediately proceeded to the Fruita boat ramp to try to recover their raft.
