Units from the Grand Junction Fire Department responded to a working structure fire around one o’clock this morning at 624 Chaco Ct. The first unit on scene (Engine 5) reported smoke and fire coming from the north side of the house and the fire was spreading quickly. Engine 5 was able to confirm that all residence were accounted for, however, there were two dogs missing. Fire crews deployed several attack lines and entered the structure to try and decrease the spread and knockdown the blaze. GJFD units where finally able to get full control of the fire at approximately 0150 hrs.

The fire had an added challenge of complete extinguishment due to a broken gas line. Fire crews were able to control the fire coming from the gas line but needed Xcel there to find the source and shut it off. Xcel responded very quickly to this request and secured the line.

The missing dogs were not found during the first two searches of the residence (primary and secondary) but were found deceased on the third search on the 2nd floor of the structure.

One resident of the structure was transported non-emergent to a nearby hospital with smoke inhalation symptoms. The condition of the resident is believed to be non life-threatening. There were no other injuries to the public or emergency personnel on this incident.

The fire, heat, and smoke damage to the residence is considered extreme.

This fire is currently under investigation by the Grand Junction Fire Marshal’s Office and any questions regarding this fire and/or the investigation will be directed to 970-549-5800.
