The Grand Junction Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire around 6 am this morning. Initial reports revealed smoke coming from the listed address. The first GJFD unit on scene (Truck 1) reported nothing showing from the first floor. Upon further investigation the Truck 1 crew found light smoke on the second floor with smoke inside the units. Crews also found a water pipe on the second floor that had burst. Crews then deployed a hoseline to the second floor for fire attack and made entry into the units. Crews were able to find the seat of the fire within a wall and extinguish the flames. Fire was completely extinguished at 0728 hrs. All units were ventilated of smoke and products of combustion.

There was minor damage due to smoke, water and overhaul. The fire is currently under investigation to determine an exact cause.

Safety Note: The burst water pipe acted as a sprinkler system which kept the fire at bay. It is recommended that commercial structures have a sprinkler system to prevent fire spread and help extinguish the fire prior to fire department arrival. Secondly, the addition of a knox box (which holds keys to all units) on the exterior of a commercial structure helps limit the amount of damage from forcible entry into the structure. This will aid in quick access into different units in the structure as well.

There were no injuries on this incident. All questions regarding this incident will be directed to the Grand Junction Fire Marshall’s Office @ 970-549-5800.
