GJFD Responds to Brush Fire Along the River

The Grand Junction Fire Department, Lower Valley Fire Department, and the Mesa County Sheriff’s Wildland Team responded yesterday at 16:53 to a brush fire in the area of Peony Dr. along the river across from Persigo Wash. Overall, six wildland crews responded, two from each fire department, along with a GJFD Battalion Chief and GJFD Engine 5. Within thirty minutes crews had extinguished the approximately 1 acre fire, but due to heavy brush along the river teams worked for two and a half hours to ensure that all hot spots were extinguished.

Brush fires along the river are particularly dangerous for our community and fire crews. Heavy underbrush and challenging access, along with dry vegetation and windy conditions create a scenario that allows fire to spread rapidly. The Grand Junction Fire Department would like to remind the community to take extra precautions while enjoying recreation in these areas.
