At 12:45 Grand Junction Fire Department responded to a brush fire in the area of the Colorado River behind Las Colonias Park. GJFD accessed the area of the fire through rough and soggy terrain. The GJFD, Mesa County Wildland Fire Team, and the Mesa County Fire Marshal determined the fire posed no threat to the surrounding area. The fire is limited to a small island in the middle of the river covered in dense brush. The Mesa County Wildland Fire Team will continue to monitor the fire by boat and the GJFD will respond back to the area as needed. GJFD responded with Engine 1, Brush 4, and a Battalion Chief.
The Grand Junction Fire Department would like to remind the community that citizens should be careful when disposing of cigarettes or working with sparking machinery due to their potential to cause unintended fires. Heavy winds and dry conditions allow fire to spread quickly. For more information on this incident contact the Community Outreach Office at (970)549-5858 or by e-mail at GJFirePIO@gjcity.org.
