Tonight at 23:19 the Grand Junction Fire Department responded to a fire in a detached garage in the 2300 block of H Rd. When crews arrived flames were visible on the roof and out of the windows. The two people that were home when the fire started safely evacuated and no one was harmed.
When the call initially came in to dispatch, the responding person reported that supplies for a painting business including paint cans were stored in the garage. When exposed to heat, paint cans can become pressurized and explode. Care should be taken when storing flammables and disposing of oily rags. Engine 2, Engine 5, Engine 1, Truck 3, Ambulance 6, a Medical Officer, GJFD Fire Marshal, and a Batallion Chief responded to the fire. The cause of the fire is unknown, but will be investigated.
This fire is the sixth working fire that the Grand Junction Fire Department has responded to in the last four days. The surge of fires has included structure fires, mobile home/camper fires, and brush fires. With five stations the Grand Junction Fire Department responds to over 15,000 calls every year.
