GJFD Responds to Fire at Landfill

At 12:38 this afternoon the Grand Junction Fire Department responded to a fire at the Mesa County Landfill. Multiple people called to report a plume of smoke that was visible from nearly everywhere in the valley. When GJFD arrived on scene the fire was burning at the surface of the landfill covering approximately one half of an acre.

Engine 1, Engine 4, Brush 4, Water Tender 5, and a Batallion Chief responded to fire. Heavy equipment operators at the landfill aided in moving debris to allow access to the fire. The cause of the fire is unknown.

The Grand Junction Fire Department would like to remind the community that dry windy conditions exist throughout the valley. Sparks from unintended sources such as discarded smokng materials, machinery, and recreational shooting can start fires that spread rapidly.  For more information on this incident contact the Community Outreach Office at GJFirePIO@gjcity.org.
