Media Notice: GJFD Wildland Team Deploying to Goodwin Fire, AZ

Tonight around 17:00 the Grand Junction Fire Department Wildland Team will be deploying to assist with fighting the Goodwin Fire in Arizona. We invite media to meet at GJFD Station 4, located at 2884 B 1/2 Rd at 16:00 for footage of the deployment. Firefighters Josh Evans, Wes Engbarth, Jacob Long, and Jake Cherveny along with Brush 4 will deploy to the fire. While high-hazard conditions exist in Grand Junction and the surrounding areas, the GJFD does still have Wildland firefighting capabilities that will remain in our community to keep our citizens safe.

The Grand Junction Fire Department Wildland Team is composed of approximately 20 GJFD employees that have gone above and beyond to obtain extra wildland firefighting certifications. This team was initially formed in response to the need for wildland tactics within the response area of the Grand Junction Fire Department. Since then, we have grown to list our resources as available for state and national-level incidents to help other communities when disaster strikes.

The Goodwin Fire started from unknown causes on Saturday June 24th. Located eight miles southwest of Mayer, AZ the fire is currently burning approximately 18,000 acres with 1% containment. To-date nine homes have been lost to the flames and many homes remain critically threatened. The GJFD Wildland Team will be joining forces with 5 Helicopters, 23 engines, and 19 ground crews that are already working to contain the blaze.
