Around 03:00 this morning the Grand Junction Fire Department responded to active fire spreading quickly at an abandoned outbuilding in the 2800 block of Orchard Ave. The fire was threatening an nearby abandoned apartment building.
No one was injured, but the buildings did show signs of being used as a living space by transients. Large amounts of debris including discarded appliances made access to the fire difficult, slow-moving, and dangerous for firefighters. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
The Grand Junction Fire Department encourages community members, landowners, and property owners to keep your property clear of unused or discarded items. Getting rid of unused materials reduces the fuel load on your property, allows occupants to escape danger quickly, and allows the fire department to quickly and efficiently protect your property in the event of a fire.
