At 4:15 PM the Grand Junction Fire Department responded to reports of a child involved in an ATV crash in the desert. Grand Junction Police Department, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, and Careflight also responded to the call. Law enforcement officers assisted in conducting an initial search of the area and were not able to locate the patient due to challenging access and rough terrain. GJFD crews and citizens with off road vehicles continued the search and were ultimately able to locate and assess the patient. Due to the rough terrain and limited access to the area, the patient was transported out by a Careflight crew to a nearby hospital.

One engine, one ambulance, two off road rescue vehicles, a Medical Officer, and a Battalion Chief from GJFD responded to the call. Precise coordination between first responders, dispatch, law enforcement officers, medical flight teams, citizens, and those involved in the accident ultimately allowed crews to successfully locate the patient and safely provide a medical assessment and care.
