GJFD Responds to Brush Fire along I70

At 3:10 PM the Grand Junction Fire Department responded to a brush fire along the westbound lanes on I70. Multiple callers reported a fire growing on the side of the road causing heavy smoke just west of the Horizon Drive exit. Engine 2 approached the fire from the Horizon Drive exit and began putting out the fire surrounded by heavy traffic. The right hand lane was shut down for the safety of fire crews. Engine 5 arrived and extinguished a second fire a short distance away. There are no know injuries. the fire was out by 3:51 PM.

Use caution while traveling during the dry summer months to prevent wildland fires. Dragging a trailer’s safety chains on the road can cause sparks and ignite dry grass. Hot brakes or an overheated vehicle pulled onto the side of the road can also ignite vegetation. Finally, it should go without saying that carelessly discarding smoking materials out of a car window can start a fire in dry grass.

GJFD responded with Engine 2, Engine 5, and a Battalion Chief. For more information on this event, contact the Community Outreach Office at GJFirePIO@gjcity.org, or by phone at (970)549-5858.
