At 4:25 PM the Grand Junction fire Department responded to the area of 27 ½ Court and G Road for high levels of hydrogen sulfide gas. Xcel Energy was drilling holes in the pavement when they discovered the presence of the poisonous combustible gas. The hydrogen sulfide was not a result of the work being done by Xcel and did not come from any of their gas lines. GJFD responded to maintain scene safety and to attempt to determine the source of the gas. Xcel remained on scene to assist and provided a backhoe to dig through the pavement. After careful excavation GJFD and Xcel took several gas readings and determined that the hydrogen sulfide had dissipated. GJFD was unable to locate an obvious source of the gas which is naturally produced from the breakdown of organic matter. GJFD cleared the area by 9:29 PM, Xcel remained to fill in the hole and reopen the road. Access to G Road was closed during the incident, leaving several homeowners unable to leave the area.
GJFD responded with Truck 3, Hazmat 3, Ambulance 3, Ambulance 2, Medic 1, Battalion 1, and Chief 3. After discovering the gas Xcel remained on scene to assist.
